Itinerary:
This is THE quintessential New England canoe trip,
led by experienced trip leaders. We will drive up to St.
Francis, ME on day 1 and camp at Pelletier’s Campground. The
next day we will get up early to be shuttled into North
Maine Woods by a hired shuttle service. We will put in at
Johnson Pond and paddle out the outlet to Allagash Stream.
We will follow this through Allagash Lake and down to and
through the entire Allagash Wilderness Waterway, camping
along the way until we reach Pelletier’s again at their
location on the St. John River.
Plan on 10 nights camping, but this could be
shortened or lengthened depending on pace, weather, etc.
Paddling skill level:
Advanced
beginner to Intermediate.
There are numerous quick-water, Class I and Class II
rapids, and several open water crossings that can be
hazardous in wind. Gear will be shuttled around the most
difficult rapids, Chase Rapids (Class II), so it can be run
in empty boats. A shuttle is also available for those who do
not want to run Chase Rapids. Some wading required as well
as at 3-4 portages.
Camping skill level:
Beginner to intermediate.
We will camp on established campsites, which all have
fire pits, picnic tables with ridge poles, and outhouses.
All camping and paddling equipment must be
self-provided. Some group equipment will be arranged between
confirmed participants.
Participants will be expected to be responsible for
all of their own food, but if some or all members of the
group want to do group breakfasts or dinners for some or all
days, that is OK as well.
Bear-proof containers are highly recommended but are
not required.
Good dry bags or a foolproof waterproofing system are an
absolute must to keep clothes and sleeping bags dry in both
rain and in the event of a capsize.
Equipment lists and other packing recommendations
will be provided to confirmed participants.
Costs:
North Maine Woods fees, Shuttle Fees, Camping fees…contact
trip leader for details.
