The Charles River Meadowlands Initiative (www.charlesrivermeadowlands.org) is working to protect and improve access to sections of the Charles and its tributary (Mine Brook) in Bellingham, Franklin, and Medway.  The US Army Corps of Engineers controls several hundred acres in the towns, part of the Charles River Natural Valley Storage Area, but these holdings are becoming land locked and have very few access points. We hope to change that.

We have met with many local and state officials as well as with officials from the US Army Corps of Engineers.  On Earth Day (April 22) or possibly the following Saturday, April 28, we are organizing a trail walk to get more residents out into this fantastic area to learn about its potential.  In coordination with this event. it would be great if a few experienced paddlers (some of the conditions in this area are NOT great), would be willing to go out and do a bit of exploring, maybe take some photos, etc. We would certainly inform the news media, which has been covering our efforts. We hope bringing more attention to the great potential of these natural areas will help persuade officials to put up signs indicating access points, add parking areas and launch sites, etc.
